A very long time ago I made my first 4 wheeled vehicle from two wrecked Peugeot 404s. When I put the dashboard in I used barrel splices, probably similar to your butt splices. After crimping them I soldered them. The solder wicks in just like a sweated pipe joint. I don't recall what I wrapped them with - probably rubber tape. I then put more than 100,000 miles on the vehicle with no electrical problems.
