For me, I would butt splice them, and then put water proof heat shrink tubi= ng over each connection. Why? Splicing is easy to repair, I don't prefer t= o solder wire to wire unless its just for a test. It seems you end up melt= ing more insulation and still question if the solder was completely bondin= g to all the wires. Also you NEVER want to tin wires that are clamped and crimped. The reason = behind this is that over time and temperature fluctuations, they will becom= e loose and end up causing opens, pulling more current and eventually could= be damaged (melt). I've seen this before. Putting paste to prevent oxidi= zing is generally done only with diss-similar metals...ie....bonding Al wir= e to a copper stud. Tin to Tin et al, you shouldn't need that. -----Original Message----- From: piclist-bounces@mit.edu [mailto:piclist-bounces@mit.edu] On Behalf Of= Charles Craft Sent: Monday, April 27, 2015 6:45 PM To: PIClist Subject: [EE] Butt splice vs solder I think I asked this a couple years ago. Just getting around to the project now. :-) I'm the not so proud owner of a= Polaris ATV with a bad wiring harness. Butt splice or solder to repair broken wires? If butt splice, tin wires first? If butt splice, treat wires with "conductive paste to reduce/prevent oxidat= ion"? I think last time around someone mentioned there was a mil-spec or aircraft= spec that said to use mechanical splices. thanks chuckc -- http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/chang= e your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclis= t ________________________________ PLEASE NOTE: The information contained in this electronic mail message is i= ntended only for the use of the designated recipient(s) named above.
