For my purposes, this discussion has essentially green lighted the use of the ESP12 in a product. Although, a reputable supplier will need to be tracked down and the modules appropriately labeled. Sidenote: the actual processor in the ESP8266 is actually quite a beast: * 32bit RISC processor running at 80MHz, * 64KBytes of instruction RAM * 96KBytes of data RAM It loads its program (such as the serial AT/modem interface) from an external SPI flash memory chip. It is possible to compile programs to run directly on it. But, there is no way to protect the program from being copied by other people. It does the job of a modem quite well thanks to Expessif's AT firmware (I have a working prototype board sitting on my desk). Another note, I believe proper data sheets are available from Expessif under an NDA. However, I haven't had any need for it yet.
