How would a good wide-band frequency counter work?

Would you amplify the signal a whole lot and feed it into a comparator?
Seems noisy. Undesired frequencies would affect the zero crossing.

I suppose maybe you would be required to bandpass filter around a known
frequency range?

I think there might be more elaborate ways - maybe some sort of 1-bit
oversampled FFT? But yes, that's getting very elaborate.
