> > Wow! You were extremely fortunate. No. Not really. The outcome was good and not 100% certain, but I was only lucky in the sense that Gary Player mooted in response to a comment re a "lucky shot". - "The longer I play the luckier I get". There is always an element of 'luck' aka chance in any action that involves reality, but the older you get the luckier you get, if you are half smart. Up until a certain amount of oldness anyway. If I'd judged that using water was not the best choice I'd have used what I judged to be the best choice. Sometimes that can be 'leaving the building' :-). Long ago when I managed to flash ignite the rear of my pajama coat the 1st 2 choices I tried did not work and the 3rd one worked but in the process I managed to burn one hand near the base of the thumb so well that the skin cracked as does a barbecued sausage that has not been spiked or slit. My back was worse :-). The 4th choice, which did not occur to me until afterwards would have been better than anything I tried, have minimised damage to my back and I'd not have burnt my hand at all. So - some decades on when I stand, extinguisher in hand in front of a stove fire, I may not instantly recall barbequed backs and sausage split hand, but the need to think on the fly and maybe do things just a bit slower if time allows has become somewhat more ingrained. [In the case of the pajama coat fire there was a shower available about 10 feet and two closed doors away. In retrospect, using that would have worked better than anything I did.] > > It is a good thing that there > > > wasn't any oil involved. Throwing water on an oil fire can make it > explode and then flash over. The nearby combustibles will ignite > including you. As above. "If I'd judged ..." . Equally, water is "not meant" to be used on electrical fires. Sodium fires are even better. Alas, there was no Sodium involved. I'd like some of that. Water is definitely out for Sodium fires. Lithium is good stuff. Lithium battery fires welcome added water :-).
