You'd think 4-bit would have had heaps more road testing. It's the
"professional" mode after all

The micros may be getting better but the cards are probably getting
worse. I worry that as the entry level size increases, the only small
(eg 4GB) cards available will be poor quality fakes

If Microchip really have been putting the effort in to add an SD
interface then you'd hope they've done due diligence. Even if
4-bit is less buggy, they could be fielding a lot of complaints about
card failures. Googling around last week I had no problem finding
thousands of posts about card issues, especially 32GB and up
