That was Plan B or C. Get an o/p V somewhere below the ripple,
say with a 7808 and then a boost SMPS to > 12V

Back-up battery may be 4 x C alkaline rather than a 12V SLA,
so I'm giving energy management (including disabling various
functions - eg audio, LCD and backlight - during mains outage)
some thought
