Well whadya know [shameface] Could have sworn I tested all possible scenarios, but I just went back and retested, and it worked with the multimeter switched off. Then it worked with just the one probe at the positive end. Then worked with another metal instrument touching. I must be getting a miniscule air gap in there somewhere, have to see if I can pad it out somehow. That was actually the very first thing I thought of, but I could have sworn all my testing seemed to indicate it was a deeper issue. I'll just be going over to this corner to hide.
