I can do a few 0603 but wouldn't want to do a lot. They're
OK for under DIP packages for example as pull-ups etc and
the last 1uF MMC I got happen to be 0603, but I do prefer
0805 or 1206 if there's room

I agree that it's better to have them and not need them than
need them and not have them. I appreciate though that it
seems wasteful to order parts that might never be used. But
it's more economic to add a couple to a planned order rather
than have to do a small second order

The gate zener is definitely advisable, I'm not so sure that a
TVS will be necessary
