I'm going to try to get my hands on one of the spare boxes at some point so I can do some further tests. A number of years ago I found a neat company doing a very cool linear optical encoder built into a fader type housing. They were targeting digitally controlled applications that needed an analog slider, like audio mixers, lighting consoles, etc. I think they went under, partially because they weren't able to make a motorized version for some reason. I wish they were still around, it would take the analog part out of the equation.
