I have found that illumination levels far below what are traditionally claimed are needed *seem* [tm] to be adequate in many cases. A modern monitor at full brightness & with a full white display has a light level at the screen surface of typically about 300 lux. My eyes are not the best examples around. I find I can get "reasonable" colour rendition at 20 lux, although 50 lux is nicer and 100 is spiffing. More can be useful, but ...
