You can be brilliant and execrable both, and some manage both simultaneously quite well indeed. I loved SC's stuff from earliest ages and only came to realise with increasing senility that some of his 'factual' material was at least as entertainemental as factual. Some was of his own intending with malice aforethought, while other, through no real fault of his own, has been picked up by those who came long after and improperly used for their own ends. It's more the latter that annoy me, but noting the opinions of many of his then public seems not entirely inapposite :-).
