Since it will only hold one sound, and I can time it, perhaps I can use the PIC to use the PLAYL pin as a single shot with retrigger. Might take a bit of testing, but perhaps if I start each "trigger" with a few mS of low on PLAYL, then bring it high for the length of the sound would work.
