If you want good quality sound (up to 44.1kHz), I've designed
a system using a dsPIC and an SD card. .WAV files are loaded
onto the card, looked up by the PIC's basic FAT reader and
extracted for the PIC's stereo audio DAC

It's actually quite simple, mostly just reading and buffering blocks
of data via interrupt
