What have you done with Bob? After two (that registered) sallies I figured some damage control was going to be in order about any time now but, whoever you are, you seem to have the measure of things very nicely. Well held, Sir. ______________________ FWIW: I agree re racism being reasonably universal. If you define it as a negative bias then a few saints may manage to miss inclusion. If you extend it to "incorrect perceptions due to race or ethnicity" it would be fairly universal. I'd easily enough drift into the category 2b. below and am aware of the ongoing need to examine my perceptions, behaviour and more across the board in all related areas. FWIW Wikipedia (what would they know? :-) ) says: 1. "*Racism* consists of both prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. It often takes the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities. It may also hold that members of different races should be treated differently." 2a .... "In sociology and psychology, some definitions only include consciously malignant forms of discrimination.[4] [5] 2b. However, some consider any assumption that a person's behavior is tied to their racial categorization to be inherently racist, regardless of whether the action is intentionally harmful or pejorative, because stereotyping necessarily subordinates individual identity to group identity." .... ..... "While race and ethnicity are considered to be separate phenomena in contemporary social science, the two terms have a long history of equivalence in popular usage and older social science literature. Racism and *racial discrimination* are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial." .... allegedly Russell --=20 http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
