When I read something like that it flashes across my mind "Oooh,
it's no good any more" but of course the chip works as well as it
ever did !!!!

The F87 is already a pretty good jellybean micro. What "desirable
new features" are you looking for ? Personally, I have a stock of
18F1320. It's getting on a bit now but regardless, the 18F architecture
(RAM organisation, more instructions etc) is a lot easier to work with
and TBH I do tend not to design with 16F
