You may think you know that you need to shield your eyes but if running the source semi-continually then YOU REALLY HAVE TO SHIELD YOUR EYES, that their days may be long on the face of the land. I left a substantial wattage UVC germicidal lamp running in my workshop doing UV exposure tests on some portable light housings while I was in China. The light was well enough shielded with shielding that no passing eyes were at risk, and I own the only pair of eyes usually at large in my workshop. While I was away I wanted to check test progress and called my wife and asked her to check results. My wife is careful, methodical and used to following technical instructions properly. (She once ran a small scientific lab - different discipline, same orderliness needed). I gave her written procedures and suitably graphic warnings via email. She carried out the required check and ended up with both eyes very nicely burned internally to the extent that she had to keep BOTH eyes covered with pads for the better part of a week. (She could lift a pad to peer out of the corner of while walking around the house but this was too painful to do unless essential for navigation). I was in China throughout - and duly popular :-). I had carried out the same check many times (before and since) with no problems. I checked the instructions subsequently and they were adequate and gave warnings & clearly detailed the risks If my wife could get trapped while following good instructions a majority of others could too. I suspect in her case that high angle UV hit her glasses and refracted off the bottoms of the lenses as they curve into the frame. Whatever it was it worked "well" *. ____________________ A combination of a UV germicidal lamp (can be small and cheap) _ a "backlight" bulb + a mix of UV LEDs will allow you to mix an match reasonably well. It is unlikely that you need "full spectrum" UV and, if you do, you would need to define the term tightly enough to ensure it met the need. The closest you are liable to get to full spectrum this side of the atmosphere is sunlight supplemented with UVC from a germicidal lamp. __________________ * Bonus: Hospital found she had retinal tearing which was at risk of major complications. Burned eyes served to get her examined in time. All things work .... .
