Thanks, I've downloaded and reviewed ft232r_prog.c, very interesting.

I can see a use for this in my lab; assigning a unique USB vendor and
product ID to each adapter so that no matter how they are plugged in,
I'll be able to find them.

I'd drop the ID pair into
/sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/ftdi_sio/new_id so that the driver will
bind to it.

I'd set up udev rules to create symbolic links to each.

(Currently, I have to keep them all connected in the same order, which
while doable is an irritation sometimes ... and the endurance of the
USB connectors might be better than the pin headers that I currently
use.)
