I know this is unlikely to be an attractive suggestion in your application but seems worth a mention. If cosmesis counts you could use an inductione charger. Nothing at all fancy. Essentially a transformer. Doing it at 50 Hz would probably be more challenging than eg utilising an off the shelf induction cooker to provide a major part of such a system.
