I used to work in electronic counter measures and the simplest type of rece=
iver is the crystal video.
An antenna (optional amplifier) diode detector and signal indicator.  The F=
uzzbuster was a civilian example.

I have a WiFi detector that works this way and it's about the size of a bus=
iness card and maybe 1/4" thick.
A press to check button and a number of LEDs that indicate signal strength.
When driving along a street lined with businesses it shows which ones have =
WiFi.

Note this type of receiver is fairly easy to make for pretty much any frequ=
ency.
You can Google for "Wifi Detector" and find them.
