Problem solved! Just needed to look well enough. And open mental filters widely enough to realise that something completely different to what I'd seen before was happening. In 'Disk Management', as well as the 37 MB DVD SSd, there was an unallocated 'Disk 1' at the other end of the list of drives. As, on examination, it poed to me a 115 GB Samsung SSD I felt reasonably safe [tm] in initialising it. The disappointing thing is that, when used with my usual photo viewer editor, speed wise it seems about as fast as a cheap seagate USB 3 3TB external drive. HOWEVER A simple multiple file copy on the same disk (so probably has head stealing on the mechanical drive) is about 20 x faster. And SSD -> SSD is about 10X faster at VERY rough test than USB3a -> USB3b Care has to be taken not to be using cached files, which produces substantial apparent gains in mechanical transfer rates. None of the file transfer rates are a great surprise. But the fact that the editor image load and display time is not disc limited is interesting. Time to look at my video card access speeds (and editing software speeds, and ...). It will be interesting to see if editing operations which do not display images are much affected. eg batch file resize/modify.
