Speculation: GPT, with a small UDF partition containing vendor software? The misidentification of the device as DVD RW is a bit strange. The small reported size may be a consequence of the misidentification. If it was on my bench, I'd send it IDENTIFY commands to figure out if the block range of the device bears any relationship to the size reported by your operating system. > There are no obvious extra partitions shown when I use the normal > tools. No, I think painting it Octarine will invoke narrative causality and the Auditors will come to Have Words. I would try repartitioning it. If it was on my bench, I'd send it one of the various ATA TRIM commands [1] for the entire block range, just for the excitement value. And have words with the vendor.
