I hate to break it to you, but some modern fifes are

tunable, and suffer from the same chromatic difficulties

as fretted instruments.

Just to add to the confusion, most of these instruments

(conspicuously not pianos, AFAIK)  can be "bent" by the

instrumentalist - Non-fretted instruments come by this

naturally, courtesy of the talented musicians who play

them...
