I now have a bunch of PICkit3 units and a RealICE. I tend to use the PICkits more, but that's mainly because they're small and easy to travel with. Plus I'm mostly using 18f chips where I wouldn't see a speed increase. I'd be curious about why your MPLABX install isn't connecting. I know that some people have had trouble with MPLABX, thankfully for me it's been working well so far. That chip should still be supported under MPLAB8 with the PICKIT3 though, so it might be worth a try.
