It's not at all clear how they can fly using them. Then try and photograph them. Sensible shutter speeds return a blur of motion. You need shutter speeds around 1/2000 - 1/8000 of a second (500 uS down to 125 uS range) to start to get any sort of wing crispness in images. Their wing-beat rate is nothing short of utterly awesome. Factor that in and the flying ability makes (more) sense.
