It was a lack of preparation. I had several solider bars and today I undid two 30mm axle nuts using one of them plus a 6 foot pipe extension, with no great effort. Pleasing "bang" as the first released and two such on the second before it gave in. Probably closer to 300 foot-pounds in their corroded on state but with a 6 foot bar that's only 50 lbf on the bar end. Parts are at a do it "yourself" wrecker. Cars are lined up on stands with (mostly) wheels off and you have to find the part you want after finding a car that suits. Once they are dead with bonnets up and badges gone etc it's very confusing for non-car-spotter brains (like mine (surprisingly)). On their website they list cars available and when they came into the yard. The rest is up to you. No published phone number. Minimal questions answered. Against all that - their prices are maybe 20% of 'ordinary' wreckers - sometimes less. $20 for whole hub. $200-$300 new so std wreckers will want $100 + probably. I rushed out of the house with the tools that had worked on our car - but I'd been lucky. Today I took a more usual cross section of weaponry and needed almost none of it. Gas sets of any sort not allowed - not even my Propane burner. Going there with your wife gets you MUCH better treatment - even from the ladies. Neither of the two hubs I took off today appeared to be suitable :-(. The $200 brigade MAY yet win. My wife wants her car back.
