Afaict 1G in a 74 series part number means "one logic gate", I've not=20
seen 2G before but I suspect it similarly means "two logic gates" (both=20
are less than the traditional four 2-input gates per chip).

I suspect what happened is that one manufacturer considered the=20
multiplexer to be a single "gate" while another considered it to be the=20
equivilent (in terms of pins used) to two basic gates and hence grouped=20
it with their two-gate chips. Then at some point later NXP ended up=20
selling under both part numbers (maybe to make people using the=20
competitors part number more aware that they were an available second=20
source)
