If it helps at all I just installed SmartGit, and use that rather than getting involved in anything on the command line - works just fine at creating and using local repositories as well as web ones such as SourceForge. Not quite self-explanatory, but the help is good and it's all fairly straightforward. I am used to using a variety of different version control software though (CVS, SVN etc.), so it may be a little more tricky if you're not.
