Thanks for the replies.

My question was more general, and I haven't got a specific goal in
mind yet.  I don't want to dig into application so soon, as I want the
application to materialise based on the techniques I can deploy.  ;-}

@Byron, I agree that cloudy or rainy might be a problem, but such
weather is quite rare where I am, in the arid areas of Australia.
Averaging over several days seems sufficient to cope with this.

@IVP, thanks, watching solar panel voltage is indeed another sensing
method.

My remote property sensor net has five nodes, two of which are
transceivers, three are transmitters.  Sensing battery voltages, pump
current, temperature, float switches, flow sensors, and RSSI.
