That was significantly before internet access was available publicly here.

I was fortunate to happen to have joined a BBS that was operated by a
computer consultant who, extremely unusually, had a leased circuit to the
Auckland University and an "Internet" feed from there - which he made
available to his users. Very rare indeed.

Modem speed initially was 300/300  followed by 1200/75 (pros and cons) then
1200/1200 and then a massive 2400/400. All bits per second, of course.

I think I never had 2400/2400 as the upgrade did not seem worth the very
substantial price.

Then 9600, then 14400, then ...  Yee ha.
128 kbps. Fantastic!!!
