You have to be on resonance, as this is the point where the current in the antenna will be maximum - the point of maximum emission is where the curren= t is max. So, if you want to change the antenna length, you can compensate by adding capacitance to the end-points (eg. wider strips). Strip width will change you impedance - wider -> lower impedance. (Recall that 72 Ohms is only with an 'infinitely' narrow conductor). Once you have the antenna optimized, worry about matching. There are many ways (i.e. books full of them) to adapt to 50 Ohms.
