Thanks, John. I ran across a reference to a connector for J6, with an "FTDI" sort-of name, and that got me a bit worried.=20 I have more bloody data sheets than I could read in 6 months! I'm working my way through the 24 series chip sheets now. I typically use 18F's, and I use WISP648 and XWISP for loading the beasts. They have a built-in serial setup, so I can just write serial data from the PIC and it appears on the PC display.
