The amateur radio community is of an age distribution where this issue
arises frequently in publications.

It seems common for friends or "the club" to be called in to select
the good bits for sale or redeployment.  The resaleables are then
advertised in the national magazine with a "deceased estate" marker.

A hackerspace is the nearest equivalent in the microcontroller world.
