I was also looking at the USB 32bit Whacker (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9713). It's nice as it's got a couple of LEDs and switches that are already on board to play with. It relies on a preprogrammed USB bootloader for programming, though you can put a header on for a PICkit. I like the Microstick II, though unfortunately Digikey doesn't have the dev carrier board in stock. I do like that it's got an on board programmer/debugger. Oh, decisions...
