> Unstalled a u2 apparently "just wants to fly" and coaxing > it down was apparently a difficult task. I read about a U2 incident over ConUS (continental US). Flight was being handled by normal air traffic control centers. Pilot was somewhere over Utah(?) -- as normal, pretty high up -- and reported his engine had flamed out. Controller was thinking emergency and asked pilot his intentions. Pilot said he was going to glide to his base in California -- he was just giving them a heads up that he couldn't accept any reroutes or holds. May be ap apocryphal but probably has a grain of truth. Starting at 70,000' with U2's reported 23:1 engine out glide ratio, plane can go over 300 miles before landing. [Engine out glide ratio may even be higher than that.] Lee Jones --=20 http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
