Back in the 70s I lived in navy housing just off the end of the runway at HNL. You learn to listen to aircraft, the normal noises don't bother you but you want to know if something's wrong. Just before we moved in there, a mil jet of some sort splashed down in the lagoon between enlisted and officers housing. Could have been a lot worse. One afternoon I'm hearing a single turbine approaching, and it's spooling up and down, up and down. Very unusual noises. I started looking for where he was and which way to run. A few seconds later this long thin jet came overhead, very quiet, with LONG LONG wings. U2 putting in at HNL. I bet something was wrong, that was the only time I ever saw one there, and it was probably still black. They wouldn't have had the jeeps with pogo sticks for the wings either. I suspect that the spooling up and down was the pilot trying to get the engine low enough to land without causing a flameout. --=20 http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
