During the heyday of electronic magazines if you wanted some gizmo you had to make it pretty much from the ground up, you couldn't buy it. Even today, presented with an article on how to, for example, make an exceptionally good audio amplifier, would I bother when there is an absolute plethora of (good but not exceptional) audio systems available off-the-shelf ?
