I soldered a 484 BGA with no more than a $100 hot air station, so I=20 would say it's not doing hobbyists any favors to continue saying SMT is=20 impossible for non-robots. The issue is really the need for many layers, my PCB in the above case=20 was 6. So I would agree that large BGAs are not hobbyist friendly.
