Yes $600 is a bit steep. My scooter runs on 4 x ~16AHr VRLA batteries. Down here in Chch they seem to cost about $95 each. Since I now have to replace at least 2 of them I looked around a bit and found a place in Auckland selling them for $56 each. Shipping is ~$9 for 2 so I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival. I did look briefly at the Li battery alternative but it'd be far too costly= .. I actually work with equipment using Li-Po batteries & have some spare but have yet to figure out a way to easily configure and safely recharge a stack of them. I'd need something like 5 or 6 in parallel and 12 or 13 in series. Maybe make a 12V-50V dc-dc and connect the 24 x 12V blocks in parallel. At least that would simplify the charger as control would be by the circuit built into the battery case.
