Yeah, MODBUS over 422/485 is/was a complete crock.=20

The 3.5 character silence for end-of-frame causes no end of trouble,
although, in practice, it is possible to properly parse packets without
checking for the timeout. However, this does make recovery from loss of
packet synchronization interesting (tm).
