I do NOT want to in any way stop or impede the useful discussion which has
been occurring on this thread.

I feel obliged to say, and if I don't then someone who may be grumpier than
I, or not, may, that while some find little to commend Microsoft's fine
offerings, others are happy enough with them, and some even ecstatic.

It is not productive or acceptable here to slang a given product at any
length without substantive relevant examples.

And it is generally held that in depth discussions of languages, OS's, and
their kin for non embedded programming is best left to other  forums where
an incredibly vast amount has already been said, is being said and will be
said on such matters. This is NOT meant to discourage people from useful
and reasonable conversations about aspects of a system or language or ...
that are directly or reasonably pertinent to a specific request - but
rather to prevent the typical religious tirades which invariably arise once
discussions focus on the tool and not the application.
