It gets messy when you get larger digits involved. eg 27 x 63 involves the 6 & 7 lines crossing to give 42 intersections. You COULD count all 42 crossings, or add 6, 7 times or add 7, 6 times but learning that 6 x 7 =3D 42 is generally easier for most people. If instead of drawing groups of lines you write the pairs of numbers where the line intersections would be and carry out the multiplications of pairs of single digit from memory then you get the graphical layout advantages of this method plus the speed gains from remembering your 'times tables'.
