FWIW http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~willie/lvr3e.PDF is the schematic on which
I based my design to drive a FET direct from a PIC using PWM - IIRC the PWM
is ~2kHz. No resistor between the PIC and the gate, though a large value
pull down resistor, no zener. It works fine for the given application where
the load is a halogen light bulb. Suggested T220 FET is an IRL3803, though
I've used IRL1004 which seem to work just as well.
