At OLPC some of my peers used a commercial web service for this, called Cacoo [2] [3], developed by Nulab. I never got into it myself, but it looked useful. For peer reviewed drawings, where the layout is automated and the source code for the drawing is subject to edits and change control, I've used GraphViz [4] [5]. Some recent work of mine is on our Wiki [6]. I've also used Dia, but my memories of that are very old.
