There are some people on forums like that who know their stuff
but I was quite disappointed at the number who (a) don't know
how to drive a laser diode properly and (b) wave them around
like toys

NZ is introducing legislation in a few months to limit the more
powerful lasers to those who can justify the importation, partly
because of the d***s who shine them at planes

But AFAIK no plane has ever been brought down or even
compromised by a laser strike on flight crew. Yes, it's really
really annoying but not 'dangerous'. You could cause more
havoc on a busy motorway or intersection with a $2 keyring
laser pointer
