What do you think of diode plus resistor from transistor collector to Vdd
or some other higher supply rail, providing that the rail is "stiff" at the
energy level and transfer rates concerned?

Diode can be "as fast as you want".

This also allows sharing a single resistor with multiple diodes subject to
proper design so max overvoltage is not exceeded.
