This is known as The Darien Gap. There have been a number of crossings of
it- I was introduced to it from the book 'Obsessions Die Hard' :

Ed Culberson.  The motorcycle he used in this trip, a BMW R80GS named
'Amigo' has been displayed at (I believe) the American Motorcyclist
Association's museum, and is now at the museum at the BMW manufacturing
plant in Greenville, South Carolina.
