Here's the plan: wrap a parabola of 25.4mm width 1mm thick zinc plated steel reinforcing strap around the gate frame at the hinge end, screw the strap into the wooden post, mount a reed switch on the strap, mount a magnet on the gate frame, run cable via strap. When in the closed position, the magnet will be closest to the reed switch. When the gate is moved in either direction away from closed position, the reed switch will relax. The bend pattern of the strap should keep it clear of the gate frame and mesh in all gate positions. (The mesh has 150m wide 100mm tall openings). Other sensors can be used on the same strap later.
