Maybe send a status message at the moment the gate is opened or closed. =20
Also send the (open) status message every n minutes while the gate is=20
left open.  Optionally send the (closed) status message every few hours=20
while the gate is closed as a confirmation that the remote site is still=20
powered.

As for the sensing, it depends on the definition of closed.  A picture=20
or diagram of the gates may clear that up.
