That was due to the TDMA nature of GSM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timing_advance HSPA OTOH is a very different animal, I don't think it has a distance limit due to protocol, but I'm not sure. In any case, I measure about 15km to the tower, so I'm well within the old GSM limit.
